Holy space births, GaGa!
Not since the days of “Bad Romance” have we seen a typical POP music video from Mother Monster. With the release of “Born This Way,” we received Lady GaGa’s manifesto in the form of a sci-fi action mini-movie that vaguely has the hint of a plot. But from what we can gather…
On G.O.A.T (a Government Owned Alien Territory in space) some crazy shit goes down.
A new race of humanity is born that is void of judgement and prejudice. It sounds kinda nice but is it really?!
Good is apparently born first and then evil is born underneath her in the apparent hell of GOAT. (Also played by GaGa, in case you haven’t seen the video but surely you have). She births a machine gun, rather violently, from her alien-parts and starts shooting shit up. Kudos to Hause of GAGA for the tremendous production value (You can’t deny this video is amazingly shot, edited, performed and produced if not a little off-putting with the straight-up vaginal birthing).
Mother Monster continues to tell us that once evil got to know her hell, she was drawn toward the goodness of this weird space experiment.
But how can she protect it without evil?

Immediately we see GaGa walk out and HOLY SHIT. Is that really her?
“Born This Way” finally begins (some 2 minutes in) and we finally get to see pieces of that strange/lovely dancing from GaGa that is weirdly amazing mostly because she does it with such genuine “cool” attitude that isn’t trying too hard. The group dancing is properly lit and it’s all sort of fun, dark, and innovatively graceful at the same time. Some definite influences from just about every major POP music video in the last 25 years or so including POP favorite X-Tina here: simple cooch-touching and crazy new skinny Mother Monster! Ass hanging out and all (hello “Dirrrty”?). Little monsters, please don’t get worked up for mentioning Christina. I Have to say Gaga looks good in this video, much better than she did at the Grammy performance.
Zombie Man makes his cameo and GaGa dances ALL OVER HIM in a tuxedo. Maybe one of the coolest sequences ever in a music video – seriously Gaga I could have watched a whole video of that! Her whipping that huge pink pony tail while riding the tatted stud is simply phenomenal choreography while still being fun and dirty. All while dressed to impress. She didn’t need to have any skin showing to give us the performance of a superstar, that’s what I call talent!
Some more dancing and rolling around on the floor from GaGa then a simulated masturbation of a penis then flipping the bird while finishing. This kind of choreography is hysterical and entertaining coming from Lady GaGa. The obvious Michael Jackson and Madonna shots in the final seconds of the clip are for… respect? Whatever the reason it works in my book, but I didn’t see the Whitney Houston reference I was so hoping for -ha.
The study of Fame has served this pop icon well so far. Let’s hope it continues with the rest of the album, which I cannot wait to hear!
