POP Review: Katy Perry and her “Teenage Dream”!

She made history this past summer with her sun drenched POP hit “California Gurls” and no doubt the irresistible single “Teenage Dream” will be any less of a chart topper, but how does one of this years most anticipated albums stack up to all the hype? Pretty damn well if you ask us! Check out our track by track review of the album below, what do you think of “Teenage Dream”?

  • Teenage Dream – What can’t we say, the simple guitar riff is genius and the track really sets up the album for what it is, a collection of PURE POP hits formulated by the best of the best!
  • Last Friday Night(T.G.I.F) – The drum kit couldn’t be anymore generic but it completely works for the track. A cool and calm Perry proclaims herself a party girl in the ranks of Ke$ha while still keeping her class, the only thing we can’t take is the bridge, yet still a solid tune.
  • California Gurls – Well, you know…
  • Firework – The strings really mature the POP factor on this one, keeping an edge while staying sophisticated, we LOVE it! The bridge alone is MAJOR, so good!
  • Peacock – Katy’s “If U Seek Amy” is an instant electric banger. Catchy hooks, disco, and brillant sassiness are just a few thoughts when listening to this sure to be hit!
  • Circle The Drain – One of our least favorite tracks on the album, definitely feels like filler material to us… next please!
  • The One That Got Away – Back to better material here, this song has all the melody and magic to be a single. The chorus is one to get stuck in the head for days! We’re seriously obsessed, may be our favorite track on the album. Plus, she name drops Radiohead in the first verse, sheer brilliance!
  • E.T. – This futuristic stomper is sexy and addictive! Lyrically it’s bonkers and we like it. An unusual track that fits quite snug on the album.
  • Who Am I Living For? – A torn Katy singing about her battle of her religious beliefs and being in the industry? Likely. We won’t remember this one at the end of it all, but it makes for a great filler track!
  • Pearl – The chorus falls short of good, but not a half bad production. Kudos for the heartfelt number, but it’s not doing much for us.
  • Hummingbird Heatbeat – POP/rock that we can’t help but say feels thrown together. It’s at this point we realize the album is beginning to lose serious steam.
  • Not Like The Movies – Just when we thought “Teenage Dream” would sizzle and fade, the albums fairytale ballad re-awakens that feeling of great POP on this record. Not single substance here, but a pleasant POP track none the less.

In the end, we have a really really good POP album that totally lives up to the hype! Sure, not every song is a winner here, but as a complete album, Katy serves it up quite nicely. Did we mention that the album is scratch and sniff(ooh cotton candy), so go out and buy the physical release, yum yum! You can purchase it HERE .

Update: As reviews come in for Teenage Dream, we are finding it is not going over well with many critics. We think to properly enjoy this album, you first have to realize that this is a POP album, and one of the most “POP” albums a high profiled American artist has released in a long time. It’s fun and silly, never taking itself too serious if at all. Many music snobs won’ t consider this “music”, but if you can’t appreciate this album for what it is, you don’t know POP!
