It Really Was A Great POP Album: Madonna – American Life

It Really Was A Great POP Album: Madonna – American Life

In 2003 the Queen of POP released a little album titled American Life. The record quickly gained mainstream disapproval in the US due to it’s album cover art (the wounds of 9/11 were all too fresh) and the not so amazing lead single “American Life”. However, the material mom still managed to deliver some memorable POP tunes.

The album left much of it’s tracks in the arms of the guitar, be it in acoustic form or just a minor usage with a strum, the guitar was highly present throughout (more so than any other Madonna record to date). Other tracks such as “Nobody Knows Me” and “Mother And Father” stuck with more of a Music era sound which felt a bit misplaced but still worked for me. I think as a collective the album didn’t flow for many, thus turning them off the record entirely. Where the fans wanted to dance, Madonna wanted them to listen.

I have to admit that I didn’t get into this album until about 3 years ago after forced listen but now I am ever so thankful. “Love Profusion”, “Intervention”, “X-Static Process”, “Easy Ride”, and my favorite “Nothing Fails” have all found a place on my playlist. I hope if you passed on this album once before, you will give it another chance.

Listen to “Nothing Fails” below, it’s truly a masterpiece – one of my favorite songs of ALL TIME! That’s saying a lot for an album that “bombed”.

Wow, thank you for posting this. I heard this album right when it came out and was completely disappointed. I soon gave it more of a chance when the Love Profusion remixes came out (check out the Blow-Up Mix) and then fell in love with most of it. Nobody Knows Me & Nothing Fails are my personal favorites. Though the American Life remixes themselves improved the title track also.
