This past Sunday I had a chance to check out one of 2012’s breakout stars at Lincoln Hall in Chicago. I have to admit that I didn’t really know what to expect as I was unfamiliar with the much buzzed about starlet. Jessie Ware was a name I saw pop up quite often in 2012 but for whatever reason, I never gave her musical offerings a listen.
I was in a similar situation back in 2011 when Lana Del Rey played at the same venue, I knew of her buzz and was aware of the show but passed as I had not heard a single one of her tunes at the time, a decision that I regret every day of my life. I knew that I couldn’t let that happen again so I jumped at the chance to catch Jessie Ware and I’m glad to report that she delivered the goods, great voice and great tunes made for a happy blogger.
Jessie Ware is a unique creature, funky and sexy indie-R&B with electronic undertones come together with soulful POP melodies for a fresh and relevant sound that Justin Timberlake and company should have taken notes from. Jessie Ware is how you do fresh in 2013, JT. Ware creates music that hipsters can proudly blare while giving the gay boys and mainstream music aficionados something to drool over.
I’ve taken the past couple of days to get myself acquainted with her music and I’m loving it. There’s the undeniable “Wildest Moments”, a top notch tune that deserves to be heard by every single human on this planet to the fun little ditty “If You’re Never Gonna Move”, which echoes the sounds of Lily Allen but with the Ware twist. Then there’s “Something Inside”, a song that sounds like angels came down to earth to help produce and write, it’s really stunning. My favorite offering from her UK debut album Devotion (yet to be released in the states) has to be “Taking In Water”, a song written for her little brother which almost didn’t make the album cut.
If you have the chance to catch Jessie live, please do so. She’s quite hilarious on stage and seems very down to earth, add a flawless vocal performance and you’re in for a serious treat.
Listen to “Taking In Water” and check out the video for “Wildest Moments” below, are you a fan?
