Perfect POP: Toni Braxton

When I was around the age of 10, “Unbreak My Heart” by Toni Braxton exploded on radio spending 11 weeks atop the Hot 100 chart with massive airplay and record sales! I, then a 10 year old boy, contributed to the songs sales by asking my mom to purchase the cassette single for me. The single included the English version on one side and the Spanish version on the other side. I’m so gay… long story short, I’m a huge Toni Braxton fan so I’ve compiled a couple of her more recent records that should have been big radio hits but failed to make a huge impact with mainstream audiences.

First up, the song “Please”, released as the first single from her 5th studio album Libra back in 2005. It’s the perfect balance of sass and POP that Braxton delivered with her mega-hit “He Wasn’t Man Enough”. The track failed to enter the Hot 100 period, I blame her then new label Blackground for lack of promotion. Listen to the album version and for fun I posted the bad ass Jason Nevins mix.

Next up, one of the biggest disappointments and losses in POP history, “Trippin (That’s The Way Love Works)”. This was the second single after “Please” from the 2005 album Libra. This song is missing nothing and has EVERYTHING. It’s lyrical depth tells an honest and familiar for all story while it’s beautiful melody keeps you captivated and listening to this epic. Give it a spin below, it’s so good!

Her most recent musical outing was the 2010 effort Pulse. The album included the songs “Make My Heart”, “Hands Tied”, and the ever so wonderful “Yesterday”. Ok, so the track wasn’t a huge disappoint as it was a UK hit (#50 peak) and a mild hit in the states but when you take into consideration how great of a song it is, one can’t help but wonder why it wasn’t a bigger hit. Listen to the album version or the Fred Falke mix below.
