Perfect POP: Hurts – Help

Perfect POP: Hurts – Help

I’ve finally taken the time to open my ears to the true beauty of Hurts’ sophomore attempt, Exile.

I quickly wrote Exile off on first listen but as I’ve had a chance to let the album soak in, I’ve realized how gigantic the whole thing really is. This effort may be lacking the instant appeal that made their debut so timeless but if given the chance, I think you’ll find it’s full of true gems.

One of my favorite tracks on the album is the emotionally devastating “Help”, the track opens gently with a piano solo and quickly builds into a beautiful monster by the time the bridge hits, this is where a haunting choir soars loudly before we find ourselves in the midst of a chaotic guitar breakdown. Everything here is perfectly executed, I only wish the song was about 10 minutes longer.

I applaud Hurts loudly for this their triumphs on Exile, it’s a fascinating listening experience that digs deeper into the dark hole they begun to dig with their debut self-titled album. If you’re a fan of the first album, please do yourself the favor of checking out Exile.
